May 29--Food makes its way to your table from lots of places these days.
Drugstores, convenience stores, warehouse clubs, discount chains, supercenters and online groceries are going after your household food budget. Even if you shop in a conventional supermarket, the way your groceries get there has changed dramatically over the past 15 years. The wholesale side of the food chain has been on a roller coaster, and not all food suppliers have kept up.
Fleming Companies Inc. has survived the evolution. Fleming is at the end of a major restructuring and went through a period of posting annual losses from operations and heavy restructuring costs. But management says those days are over. This year, Fleming expects to record $20 million in restructuring charges, compared with last year's more than $300 million.
The company, which moved its headquarters to Lewisville from Oklahoma City last year, had revenue of $14.4 billion in 2000 and ranked No. 6 among Dallas-Fort Worth-area public companies. It employs about 1,250 people in the Dallas area.
