May 28--In a rare move, the Coast Guard on Sunday ordered the Norway -- Norwegian Cruise Line's storied vessel -- to stay in port after inspectors discovered at least 105 fire safety violations, just hours before the 39-year-old former ocean liner was about to sail on a seven-day Caribbean cruise with 2,032 passengers.
A Coast Guard official, Scott Carr, said he could not remember another recent time when his agency had taken the extraordinary step of prohibiting a cruise ship from leaving port with passengers already on board.
The passengers remained on the ship, booked to capacity and docked at the Port of Miami-Dade, while cruise line officials determined how long repairs would take.
