May 27--Jim Barton initially blamed last year's protracted presidential election for the slowdown at his travel agency.
"Back in November and December, it was exceptionally slow, even for those months," said Mr. Barton, owner of Jigsaw Travel in Dallas. "I thought maybe it was because of the election. The election dragged on, and after that it never picked back up."
In retrospect, Mr. Barton realizes it was the start of the nation's economic slump, with families canceling vacations and companies rethinking business trips.
