May 26--PRESTIGIOUS GOLF-COURSE DEVELOPERS IN DEMAND: In the Dallas-Fort Worth market, designer names get as much attention on the green as they do at the Galleria.
Developers have carved dozens of golf courses out of the prairie in recent years. Now they are finding that the key to a property's financial success lies in hiring top-tier architects such as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Weiskopf or Tom Fazio.
"The value of the architect was first recognized in golf communities, where developers saw higher prices for lots," said Dave Richey, senior vice president of development at Dallas-based ClubCorp Inc.
"Then clubs started realizing they could get higher membership fees."
With their services in demand, the architects are becoming highly paid superstars -- or brand names, if you will -- who command $1 million or more to lay out 18 holes on...
