May 25--A unexpected obstacle has developed as Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. seeks federal approval of plans to add WWOR-TV/Ch. 9 to its empire while continuing to own the New York Post.
Sen. James Jeffords' exit from the Republican Party, which shifted the balance of power in the Senate, is expected to usher in a new chairman of the Senate committee that oversees the Federal Communications Commission -- a lawmaker considered hostile to the kind of relief Murdoch needs in Washington.
