May 25--A company that for four decades has kept an exclusive lock on the lucrative towing contract at Port Everglades may have to share the $7 million-a-year business after all.
Broward County Commissioner Ben Graber said he would vote to allow Tugz International to provide tugboat services at Port Everglades. That could reverse a 5-4 vote by the board on March 14 in which Tugz -- a 101-year-old Great Lakes towing company that operates in 35 ports around the world -- was rejected in favor of retaining the monopoly by Seabulk International.
Seabulk is the new name of the company long known as Hvide Marine. The locally influential corporation has been rocked with troubles in the past two years. It declared bankruptcy in 1999 and was taken over by a French multinational....
