May 25--After more than two years of negotiations, federal mediators declared an impasse in contract talks between American Airlines and its flight attendants, making a walkout possible in the days leading up to the busy July 4 holiday.
As the next step, the National Mediation Board has offered binding arbitration, which American has accepted. But if the union rejects the offer -- as is expected -- the parties will be released into a 30-day cooling off period, after which the union could strike.
