May 25--Burl Osborne, celebrated as one of the nation's most successful editors and publishers, said Thursday that he would retire as publisher of The Dallas Morning News on June 15.
At 63, Mr. Osborne is beginning to wind down some of his duties at the newspaper and at its parent, Dallas-based Belo. He plans to retire as a Belo executive officer on Dec. 31, 2001. He will take on the title of publisher emeritus of The News, remain on Belo's board of directors until May 2002 and serve as chairman of The Belo Foundation.
After 21 years at The News, Mr. Osborne said, he looks forward to devoting more time to other interests. "Frankly, I want to relax some," he said.
Word of Mr. Osborne's plans spread quickly through journalism circles.
"He is one of the truly great figures in American journalism," said Loren Ghiglione, director of the school of journalism at the University of Southern California and a former newspaper owner and editor.
Mr. Osborne said he wants to make way for "new blood" at The News.
"I've loved every minute of it," Mr. Osborne said of his tenure at The News. "Let me tell you why it's been so much fun. You can't be surrounded by people who are more interesting, smart, passionate and energetic.
