May 25--President Bush is waiting to see whether American Airlines Inc. and its flight attendants can break through an impasse in their contract talks before deciding whether to intervene and block a strike, a spokesman said Thursday.

The National Mediation Board officially declared the impasse late Wednesday in negotiations between the Fort Worth-based carrier, the world's largest airline, and the union representing 23,000 flight attendants.
