May 24--Despite a year's worth of headlines about deadly tire-related crashes and lawsuits -- punctuated by repeated TV news clips showing horrible wrecks -- Ford's Explorer remains America's most popular sport-utility vehicle.
Ford sold a record 445,157 Explorers last year. Although sales so far this year are off 22 percent from that pace, it remains the top-selling SUV and industry analysts said Wednesday they expect Explorer to retain its head-of-the-class status even in the face of this week's renewed Firestone tire controversy.
"There's no indication that this will be more than a drop in the bucket when it comes to Explorer sales," said Derek Humphrey, manager of North American forecasting for auto marketing consultant J.D. Power & Associates....
