May 24--A compromise reached Wednesday authorizes the state to chop down canker-infested citrus trees on 2,700 Miami-Dade County properties unless an owner formally objects, which the state expects few are likely to do.
The state Department of Agriculture hopes to hand-deliver letters to 2,700 targeted tree owners by early next week and begin cutting 10 days afterward.
If owners wish to save their diseased trees, they must sign and return a form, free of charge, indicating their objection within 10 days of receipt. Those trees will not be destroyed unless a future court ruling mandates their removal.
