May 24--Following a national trend toward escalating directory assistance rates, BellSouth on Wednesday raised the fee it charges Florida callers who dial 411 to get information on local telephone numbers.
The five-cent increase brings the charge for local directory assistance to 30 cents. Callers may request two numbers per call.
Two other phone companies, Verizon and Qwest, increased their charges this month for long-distance directory assistance to as much as $1.25 per request.
For the time being, BellSouth is holding the line on its 411 long-distance directory assistance at 95 cents per call -- the same fee that Qwest and Verizon had been charging most of...
