May 24--Joshua Owen remembers clearly his first infatuation with a video game soundtrack.

"There was a game -- and it's not very well-known -- called Ys Book I and II. And it was on a CD platform, and I fell absolutely in love with it," says Mr. Owen, 23, who is coordinating the computer gaming section of the A-Kon anime convention June 1 to 3 in Dallas.

"I still think it's one of the greatest soundtracks ever on a video game platform. It's very well-orchestrated, and it was probably one of the first CD-quality games as far as game music."

The Ys (pronounced ees) series was designed for the TurboGrafx 16 CD console in 1989, and many gamers still listen to the tunes from that game.

Ys and other games are slowly being recognized for more than just their game play, say players and game music writers. Developers are waking up to the fact that many people are willing to spend money on stand-alone game soundtracks, they say.
