Jun. 11--Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone was sitting in his plush midtown office one morning this week wearing a piece of red thread tied around his left wrist, a good luck charm given to the media mogul by a rabbi in Los Angeles.
"The theory is it will ward off all evil," Redstone said. "I'm not necessarily believing that that's true, but what have I got to lose?"
Maybe Redstone doesn't need the lucky charm.
After facing down what he calls the worst disaster of his life, the stark decline of Viacom four years ago, Redstone's vast empire -- which encompasses everything from CBS and "Survivor" to the "Rugrats," Paramount Pictures and MTV -- is clicking on nearly every front.
