FORT LAUDERDALE _ Bobby Phills has not walked this earth in more than 15 months.
Not once in that span has he crowded close to an opposing player and ripped the ball from his hands. Not once has he run down the court and beaten the pack to a fast-break layup. Not once has he made a turnaround jump shot with a defender's hand in his face. Not once has he won a game for the Charlotte Hornets.
But his influence lives on.
His infectious laughter has not been heard inside the Hornets locker room since that Jan. 12 morning when Phills finished a shootaround, hopped into his black Porsche and sped to his death less than a mile from Charlotte Coliseum. He was 30.
But still, Phills' influence lives on.
It's more than just the huge No. 13 jersey that will hang from the rafters tonight when the Hornets try to sweep the Miami Heat in the first round...
