CHICAGO _ Unwilling to risk another costly flop at quarterback, the San Diego Chargers surprised the NFL on Friday when they traded the No. 1 pick in Saturday's draft to the Atlanta Falcons, who happily will take their chances with Virginia Tech's talented but young Michael Vick.
The Chargers, still reeling from the failure of 1998 first-round failure Ryan Leaf, moved to Atlanta's fifth spot and are likely to take Texas Christian running back LaDainian Tomlinson if he's there, leaving the Bears without a shot at their first choice. California defensive end Andre Carter is now the Bears' most likely pick, but the top of the draft remained unusually uncertain less than 24 hours before its start.
The Chargers also got the Falcons' third-round pick plus receiver-return man Tim Dwight and the Falcons' second-round draft choice in 2002 for the rights…
