Jun. 19--Competition for the flourishing "self-banked" segment of the community -- those who do not have bank accounts -- among Knoxville area check-cashing outlets is getting more intense with Kroger grocery stores now vying for that business.
San Francisco-based Innoventry Corp. has begun installing its RPM paycheck-cashing machines, which collect a fee for cashing payroll and government checks, in area Kroger stores. Kroger has been testing Innoventry's stand-alone kiosks and is now introducing them throughout its 84-store East and Middle Tennessee, southern Kentucky and northern Alabama markets.
At the same time, the retail grocery chain is informing local customers that as of July 1, it will only cash personal checks of no more than $20. The company has for years had a liberal check-cashing policy and is now routing much of that service through the new RPM machines.
