County Pay Raises Uncertain.

Aug. 7--No Montgomery County employees are expected to lose their jobs because of funding problems next year, but their merit raises are in question.

"The commission said to me there will be no layoffs," Montgomery County Administrator Donnie Mims said Monday. "There are some positions that will not be filled, though."

The county has run into rough budget waters in the past year because of waning sales tax revenues, which account for 47 percent of the county general fund. So, Mims asked department heads to draw up 2002 budgets 7 percent below those of 2001.
