Montgomery, Ala., Plans to Provide Pay Raises to Some City Workers.

Aug. 8--Eligible city employees will get raises without increasing taxes or rate hikes for city permits and services, according to Mayor Bobby Bright's proposed $141 million budget, which he presented to the City Council on Tuesday.

The proposed fiscal year 2002 budget provides for merit raises for eligible city employees and a $300 per employee across-the-board raise. The across-the-board raises were in doubt because of the slow revenue growth experienced through the year.

"It's a good budget," said District 9 Councilman Charles Jinright.
