Feb. 6--Valerie Rose Redmond realized her dream of being a writer and wants to help others to summon the courage to do the same.

She set out on a path to a new career several years before she dared to quit her technical writing job at 3M Co.

Her first book was published in 1999, and she formed Roses are READ Productions in 2000. But it wasn't until 2002 that Redmond accepted a buy-out offer from 3M after 15 years there and lined up financing to run her self-publishing and motivational speaking business from her Eagan home.

Redmond only publishes her own books, but her mission is much broader. She wants to promote reading and offer strong role models by featuring minorities as central characters in …
