OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. _ Some Ocean Springs teens are earning high school credits while getting a taste of the food services industry.
Students in a culinary arts program at the Keys Technology and Vocational Center prepare and serve about 25 lunches a week at the school's Hungry Hounds Cafe. They deliver another 30 or so to school district employees.
Under the guidance of program director Alison LeBire, the students operate the cafe on Wednesdays, offering a set menu at a price of $4, including dessert and iced tea.
"We've got some regulars who come every week now," said LeBire. "We're growing and our reputation is getting out into the community."
LeBire's class made it to the national finals last year in the culinary division of Skills USA, a competition of Vo-Tech schools. They also recently hosted the retired school employees breakfast and prepared dinner for the School Board. They're honing their ...
