LOS ANGELES _ Whether a victory over the expansion Charlotte Bobcats or Kobe Bryant feeling well enough to join his team on the bench is a more significant sign of progress, the Lakers got both Sunday.
Without Coach Rudy Tomjanovich because of a stomach virus, the Lakers handled Charlotte, 101-90. Lakers guard Chucky Atkins put the accomplishment in this mild perspective: ``It qualifies as a game that got us off a three-game losing streak."
Bryant joined the team on the bench for the first time since severely spraining his right ankle Jan.13. He previously had stayed back and received treatment during games, but he said his recovery has advanced beyond that stage.
``It's at that point where it's not crucial for me to do treatment and therapy around the clock," Bryant said.
Bryant expressed hope he could play within two weeks. As long as he remains out, though, the Lakers will need the desire they showed to start against Charlotte: The Lakers offered renewed focus in their first game since slipping out of the Western Conference playoff bracket.
``It seemed like other teams wanted it more than we did," Atkins said of the previous three games. ``That's why we lost."
