TEMPE, Ariz. _ For Washington, the beat goes on.
For Arizona State, the search continues. And time is starting to run out.
The Sun Devils had another good shot at that elusive signature victory Sunday at Wells Fargo Arena. They didn't show up for the second half at Arizona. They couldn't make free throws against UCLA. But this time, their suspect depth, penchant for untimely mistakes or sometimes lax defense can't be fingered as the culprit.
The Devils played well, well enough to win many games. But the 10th-ranked Huskies simply played better, using 18 second-half points from star guard Nate Robinson and an impressive run of late free throws to pull away from ASU and back into a tie for the Pac-10 lead with a 79-70 win.
The Huskies (17-3, 7-2 Pac-10) pressured ASU into 21 turnovers, pushed Sun Devil star Ike Diogu out of his comfort zone and hit every big shot to keep the crowd of 9,434 from becoming a major factor. Robinson finished with a game-high 23 points, while guard Tre Simmons added 15 as the Huskies rebounded from a loss at Arizona to gain the weekend split.
"Washington is a good team, and they've won a lot of games because of being able to make plays," ASU coach Rob Evans said. "Our guys fought hard, but their kids are mentally tough and hard-nosed. That's why they are No.a10 in the country."
