FOXBORO, Mass. _ Provincialism is powerful. So powerful that it can survive the influences of mass media, of an endless array of national sports channels, of an endless stream of national sports services over the internet.
And so it was last week, after a Patriots practice, that a New England reporter asked Adam Vinatieri, the most celebrated kicker in Super Bowl history, if he didn't hold a decided edge over a "young" kicker. Vinatieri's accurate foot has provided the difference in both of New England's Super Bowl victories.
Eagles kicker David Akers was, in the eyes of the beholder, unproven.
But . . . young?
Akers is in his sixth season, and his fifth postseason. Vinatieri, in his ninth season, smiled at the question, as he had smiled previously when variations of that question were offered.
"David is going to the Pro Bowl this year," he said. "I'm fortunate to be going too. So I don't think you can go wrong either way."
