FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ There's no questioning the following about Carlos Delgado after his first day as a Marlin: He instantly makes this team a contender. He's already the best left-handed slugger in club history. He has a deft way with words and bilingual sense of humor.
And he has the right to ignore the seventh-inning singing of God Bless America.
Delgado, a Puerto Rican, has the American-given right to take a stand by not standing for this song. He has the right to question baseball's politics and America's war. He has the we-hold-these-truths-to-be-self-evident right in this country to protest in any manner to his choosing.
It looks like he will, too.
