Johnny Carson was to late-night TV what Elvis Presley was to pop music: The King.
Carson, who died Sunday, was more than an entertainer to millions of Americas. For 30 years, he was the last voice people heard at night, a friend welcomed in their bedroom. He was Johnny.
His "Tonight Show" was and remains the gold standard. The King of Late Night also was a kingmaker. Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen DeGeneres, Roseanne Barr, Garry Shandling and Jay Leno, who would succeed Johnny at the "Tonight" show desk, are just a few of the comics who saw their careers soar after getting a wink or nod from Johnny.
