STARKVILLE, Miss. _ South Carolina found itself in a perfect situation to pull an upset on Saturday night.
Instead, No. 17 Mississippi State, with foul-plagued star forward Lawrence Roberts on the bench, outscored the Gamecocks by 10 points during a key second-half stretch to earn a 73-65 SEC win at Humphrey Coliseum.
USC (10-6 overall, 2-3 in the SEC) was seeking to end a seven-game SEC road losing streak and beat a ranked team after three near misses.
The Gamecocks appeared to be in good shape when Roberts picked up his fourth foul and went to the bench with 12:14 to play.
