Catchers are baseball's least appreciated players: despite their extensive duties on the field, the men behind the mask deserve more respect.

THE CATCHER IS, HANDS DOWN, the most underappreciated man in sports.

People talk about the offensive lineman in football, but he's really a one-trick pony. Goalies in soccer and hockey do dirty work, but they also are lauded after a shutout. When a pitcher throws a shutout, nobody remembers the man who called the pitches.

Even people who ought to know better sometimes disregard the catcher. Hail of Fame manager Casey Stengel once said famously, "You have to have a catcher or you'll have all passed balls." Sure, you think it's funny, but you're not a catcher.
