Jan. 14--SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. -- Surfside Beach's Public Safety director is hoping to become the town's administrator, after leading the emergency medical service, fire and police departments for about 19 months.
Clyde Merryman, a retired FBI agent, confirmed Thursday that he has applied for the administrator's job. Former Administrator Michael Kovacs resigned in November after serving about five years.
Billy Hendrix, who was named interim administrator after Kovacs resigned, stepped down Tuesday, citing health concerns, Mayor Roy Hyman said.
