David Daniels is unique in the opera world--a countertenor who has developed the kind of star career normally reserved for singers of more conventional vocal makeup. In Baroque opera, whether caressing the sweetness of a Handelian adagio or executing the divisions in bravura passagework with martial aplomb, he makes the reasons for his success entirely clear. On this disc, Daniels ventures far afield of his normal repertoire to tackle a selection of romantic chansons, with Nuits d'Ete as the main feature.
It's not especially apt territory for his talents. Daniels's tone lacks the beauty and the range of color needed for this material, and he's particularly at a loss to convey languor or sensuality.
