For better or for worse, master classes can be life-changing events. My Schubert scores are filled with breath marks with the superscript ES76. Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, along with her husband, Walter Legge, gave a week of classes at the University of Michigan. I was a singer and observer during that week, and now, twenty-eight years later, I can recall many of her tips. The participants had multiple goals: to touch a legend, to gain insights into the music business, to test their value as singers and to learn new repertoire. For me, these classes led to a decision to apply to graduate school and get serious about singing.
