CANCUN, Mexico _ The protesters locked elbows, scaled the fences and were fought back with a barrage of teargas. One stabbed himself and later died. Meanwhile, hecklers sneaked into the opening ceremony and chanted "Shame!"

Aside from those displays of protest and rage, negotiators from 146 countries in the World Trade Organization sat down in this Caribbean resort Wednesday to begin a crucial but controversial round of meetings with the goal of freeing up global commerce.

Despite promises by U.S. and other officials to level the playing field between the world's rich and poor, thousands of small-time farmers assembled here to march in protest of free trade, which they say is tilted toward the powerful and prevents them from making a fair living.
