Office Depot uncorked a splashy new store format Wednesday with a look designed to spur a push into the Northeast and distinguish the office supply chain from its competitors.
Millennium2 is filled with bright colors, lots of readily available merchandise, faster cash registers and more employees on the sales floor _ a dramatic change from several other formats Office Depot has tried. High narrow aisles have been replaced by horsehoe-shaped sections labeled with big bold print and clear views to every part of the store.
The first M2 officially opened in Venice, Fla., Thursday. A South Florida store will open in August at a yet-to-be-disclosed location. A version will open in Paris in August as well.
The company would not say what the launch is costing.
Office Depot's lab was a leased former Levitz furniture outlet in Boca Raton, Fla. There, several executives hatched the idea for a design to make shopping easier for the customer and more profitable for the company, which just saw its North American retail store sales increase for the first time since 2000.
``This represents the best of our learning, the best of our knowledge,'' said Bruce Nelson, Office Depot's chairman and chief executive.
