FORT WORTH, Texas _ Michelle Wie, 14, is capable of doing things on the golf course that other teens _ as well as players twice her age _ cannot fathom.
That is why Wie became the first amateur to receive a special exemption into this week's U.S. Women's Open. The move raised eyebrows among some LPGA Tour veterans who will be competing against Wie, beginning in Thursday's opening round at Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, Mass.
But the Honolulu resident has validated that decision with her 2004 performances, which include a fourth-place finish at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the first major of the LPGA Tour season, as well as an even-par performance for 36 holes at a PGA Tour event in January.
