Young uniformed Americans in Iraq deserve better. Theirs is a thankless task. Unwanted abroad and underappreciated at home, they perform their often unpopular, frequently dangerous jobs without complaint. Nobody pauses to note their quiet heroism.
Villains, contrarily, are high-profile _ the hate-crazed fanatics who kidnap innocent hostages and behead them when outrageous policy demands are not met. It's easy for us to hate them, infecting ourselves with a low-grade case of their malady.
Whatever we think of this crummy war, the troops deserve our thanks. Their lot isn't easy, and it wasn't their idea. We're in an unaccustomed, uncomfortable role as the aggressors, the occupiers.
