In 1998 I first attended Book Expo in Chicago, the yearly convention thrown by and for the publishing industry. Most book people are closet introverts _ not a fashionable bunch. But it was more than passing strange to see that the most coveted convention garb was an ensemble only a geek could love _ tan khakis and a red sports shirt. Those thus clad in the official uniform of Amazon.com had the powerhouses of publishing writhing at their feet.
