A flash of fire comes from a Viet Cong soldier's rifle and then searing pain. It's a picture that never fades from the memory of the Rev. Bobby Welch, the recently elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention.
"I was shot in the chest, just above the heart," the pastor of the 4,000-member First Baptist Church of Daytona Beach, Fla., said in a phone interview recently, recalling what happened in September 1966. "They threw me into a helicopter on top of three dead men and expected me to die. But I didn't die.
