As reality series go, The Amazing Race still has an amazing grace.
Last year's upset Emmy winner in the genre _ it beat both "American Idol" and "Survivor" _ is scintillating without being sleazy, combative but not corrosive. In other words, it never stoops to the base level of its summertime running mate, "Big Brother." The fifth editions of both CBS shows begin with 90-minute episodes Tuesday night. "Amazing Race 5" even has a star player from "Big Brother 4" _ she-devil runner-up Alison Irwin.
"Evil bitches win," she proclaimed on "BB4." Now she's more or less in rehab on "AR5" with "off-and-on" beau Donald Patrick.
On "BB4," "I did a lot of bad things," Alison said during introductions of the 11 two-member teams. "You saw me lie, you saw me cheat, you saw me flirt and you saw me kiss another guy. And we (she and Donald) got into a lot of fights about it."
