KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ Eddie Cheever Jr. was not being totally complimentary two years ago when he called the young driver with whom he had entrusted one of his very expensive Indy Racing League cars "fast.''
Yes, Cheever said, South African rookie Tomas Scheckter could indeed get a car up to speed with relative ease. But once it was up to speed, Scheckter had a hard time getting that car to stay on the racetrack. In other words, he was crashing cars at an alarming rate.
Now, two years and two teams later, Scheckter says he has become a more complete driver, one who knows how to stay calm, relaxed and controlled in a race car. It's taken about 200-mph "incidents'' but, he says, the lesson has been learned.
