"My Life" by Bill Clinton; Knopf ($35)
___
I hated Bill Clinton the president, but I love Bill Clinton the writer.
That's how surprising "My Life," the former president's memoirs, is. OK, the book is messy and long-winded. Clinton dodges enough questions to raise his detractors' blood pressures into stroke range. There's enough policy wonkiness and political minutiae to set half the planet asnore.
But there's a wonderful naturalness to Clinton's writing in "My Life" and enough insights into this puzzling man that it's well worth plunking down $35 _ or $26, which is what I paid _ for 957 pages of his almost-unfiltered musings. Even if _ maybe especially if _ you thought he was a bad choice for president, or if you thought he was a good choice who blew his best chances.
I'm not saying you'll change your mind about him. But you might see him afresh, and that is a rare achievement in a political memoir.
