When Julie Moran left the television studio after an interview on Good Morning America in 2002, she had a feeling different from the ones she normally got after hosting ABC's Wide World of Sports or the popular show Entertainment Tonight.
"Charlie Gibson (the host of Good Morning America) and I really got into the topic of women and heart disease," Moran says. "I felt like I'd made a real impact--there's just so much of a reward just feeling like some information, some knowledge, you can share is beneficial to someone else's life."
As the celebrity spokesperson for Simple Solutions, an American Hear Association (AHA) program designed to help women improve their cardiovascular heath, Moran's first task is to make Americans aware of the fact that more women than men are dying of heart disease.
"Charlie had had a heart attack. He thought men were more at risk," Moran says. In fact, one out of every 2.4 women succumbs to heart disease, making it the leading cause of death among women. People are surprised to learn this, Moran says, because they assume it's breast cancer or some other form of cancer.
Get with the Program
AS the name implies, the Simple Solutions program makes it easier for any woman to incorporate healthful practices into her life that can thwart heart disease. And, it's a program that comes to you: You simply sign up (it's free), and the AHA sends you monthly tips about nutrition, diet and exercise. Participants also receive online newsletters and Enjoy!, a cookbook filled with heart-healthy recipes.
"Simple Solutions is realistic," Moran says. "We understand you can't just change your lifestyle. But you can incorporate one or two things that help you live healthier. You start slowly, and build on that."
