New research emphasizes the possible role for high-dose antioxidants in treating advanced cases of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness after age 65.
A 2001 study had found a reduced risk of advanced AMD for some of those given high-dose antioxidant supplements. But the latest study--reported in the November 2003 issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology--determined that over 300,000 people could avoid advanced AMD if they received certain supplements while they were at the intermediate stage of the disease.
