It seems that the expression "to wear your heart on your sleeve" comes from the Middle Ages practice of men and women drawing names from a bowl to decide who their Valentines would be, then pinning the name to a sleeve for one week. Thus, would-be lovers found each other.
The roots of Valentine's Day go back much further. A Roman priest named Valentine defied the Emperor Claudius the Cruel by marrying couples in secret. Claudius thought marriage prevented men from joining the legions, so he canceled all marriages and engagements. When he found out about Valentine's wedding chapel, as it were, Claudius had the priest killed. The day was February 14, the year around 270.
It's fitting that we should be talking about love in an issue of BN that's focused on heart disease. If you care about someone, you want her to be healthy--and since heart disease is the leading killer of women, this issue is something of our Valentine's Day card to readers.
