NEW ORLEANS _ Oklahoma wide receiver Mark Clayton picked the wrong time to have his worst game of the season.

Clayton dropped a would-be touchdown pass in the closing minutes of the 70th Sugar Bowl contest between third-ranked Oklahoma and LSU on Sunday night.

The second-ranked Tigers held on for a 21-14 victory in the Bowl Championship Series national championship game before a boisterous Louisiana Superdome crowd of 79,342.

LSU (13-1) won its first national title since 1958, when the Tigers were led by running back Billy Cannon, who would go on to win the Heisman Trophy the next season.
