CHAMPAIGN, Ill. _ They have the same name and, in basketball terms, they both have game.
The similarity ends there.
Roger Powell, the father, starred for Illinois State.
Roger Powell, the son, is playing a low profile but highly effective role for Illinois, which will conclude the nonconference segment of its season against his father's alma mater Saturday afternoon in Assembly Hall.
"Illinois State was really great for me, but I wanted Roger to pick the school he wanted to go to," the father said. "There's more to it than basketball. Academics are very, very important and you have to enjoy the campus. He picked the right school for him."
The father relied on his outside shooting touch to score 1,306 points from 1972-76, putting him 18th on Illinois State's list of all-time scorers. The son is leading Illinois in scoring with a 14-point average because of his effectiveness beneath the basket.
