PASADENA, Calif. _ It was a good day for football on Thursday in the great, gaping saucer of the Rose Bowl, but it turned out to be a bad day for all the slide-rule jockeys who dreamed up the impenetrable mess that is the Bowl Championship Series.
The BCS was supposed to forever prevent an untidy end to the college football season. The bowl-and-poll system had produced 10 split championships before the calculus boys took over and promised a true title game every year.
Well, forever didn't last six seasons, which is lousy efficiency even by the standards of most college administrators.
