DETROIT _ Coach Dave Lewis and assistants Barry Smith and Joe Kocur left a message for Gerard Gallant, the new coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets, who was traveling to Tampa Bay, Fla. for a game Friday.
``We said: `Once you get done with all your important calls, maybe give us a call. The bottom of the barrel would like to congratulate you,''' Lewis said after the Detroit Red Wings practiced Thursday.
Gallant, known as Spud when he played for the Red Wings in 1984-93, was promoted from assistant Thursday by Doug MacLean, who stepped down as coach but remained president and general manager.
