COLUMBUS, Ga. _ Local historian and gourmet chef Alfonso Biggs of Columbus died Monday, just 48 days short of his 100th birthday.
Biggs was born Feb. 14, 1904, in Talbot County, Ga., son of the late Ella Newsome Biggs and Otha Biggs.
He was educated in Talbot County public schools, and in 1921 received a Normal Certificate from Central City College, which at the time was affiliated with Mercer University.
He taught school and worked in cotton mills before becoming a master cook.
In a 65-year catering career, he cooked for five Fort Benning generals and three presidents _ Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower.
