The Bears' next coach will be an offensive coach if general manager Jerry Angelo gets what he wants _ and he'd better.
Angelo said it's not the No. 1 priority, but he has noticed that six of the last seven Super Bowl winners have been coached by offensive minds. Along with legions of Bears watchers over the years, Angelo also has noticed: "We need to get better on offense."
All the NFC North teams except the Bears have head coaches with backgrounds on offense. Eleven of the 16 NFC teams this season had coaches with offensive backgrounds, although two, Atlanta's Dan Reeves and the New York Giants' Jim Fassel, preceded Dick Jauron on the firing line.
Angelo will have defensive coaches on his preliminary list of six to eight candidates, but it would be a surprise if he puts the development of young quarterback Rex Grossman into a defensive coach's hands.
