This hefty, silk-bound volume appears just in time for holiday gift-giving, and it's hard to think what the publishers could have done to make it more tempting: chocolates are about all that's missing. Ann Fiery offers synopses of thirty-one favorite operas, with short prefaces and occasional sidebars including historical background and other fun facts. All the operas are so familiar, however, that it's unclear who her target audience is: neophytes who don't know these stories may prefer a smaller, cheaper book, and serious buffs will want to explore lesser-known works.
